“Our university is full of academics who don’t live in an ivory tower, but are working on some of the most exciting and important matters around; people who think deeply about certain aspects of life and the world around them.”
So says Professor Vivienne Lawack, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic of the University of the Western Cape (UWC) - and host of Academic Week 2018. Running from 10 to 14 September 2018, Academic Week is a celebration of some of the University’s contributions to the public debate on some of the biggest and most important questions around.
Questions include:
- How do we help students complete their studies and make sure they get the most out of their time at university?
- What do universities stand for in a time when European/Western domination of curricula is being questioned? What roles do Africanisation and internationalisation play in higher education?
- In a world of rapid technological and social change, how do universities cope? And how do we, as individuals, thrive in this ever-changing world?
Over the course of the week, UWC academics from across the spectrum will be tackling these matters and more.
This year, Academic Week’s themes are connected to the University of the Western Cape’s key priorities:
- Academic excellence and student success
- The University in the Fourth Industrial Revolution
- Research-led learning and teaching
- Curriculum transformation and renewal
Academic Week 2018 is intended as a space where the UWC community can come together and learn about the wonderful things happening on campus right now - and find out how they can get involved.
It also features “UWC Creates” (as well as UWC Creates) this year, to showcase art and creativity at UWC - and explore their role in a holistic education.
“It’s a special occasion for us to meet like this, and it’s something I look forward to all year long,” says Prof Lawack. “If we listen to each other we may be able to learn from each other - and find out how different fields of learning can contribute to our own. Join in the celebration - and share in the power of knowledge.”
