The University of the Western Cape (UWC) and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) are partnering to ensure that academically performing students are provided with adequate opportunities to complete their qualifications.
The Access to Success campaign, launched on 25 August 2016 at the SABC Sea Point offices, highlights the importance of a collective solution-finding effort - where higher education institutions, corporates and national structures collaborate to help find sustainable solutions for students in financial need.
While substantial funds have been allocated to students through the National Student Financial-Aid Scheme and the UWC bursary fund, the need to assist many students financially remains.
“We are a people who are no strangers to standing together in response to a need for doing greater good,” says Patricia Lawrence, Institutional Advancement at UWC. “As an institution, we at UWC pride ourselves on our celebrated and consistent achievements with respect to proactively transforming disadvantaged perceptions into advantaged realities.”
“As an organisation that is accountable to the people of South Africa, as the national broadcaster, it is our responsibility to ensure that we touch on, embrace and engage on issues that affect the lives of those we serve,” says Andile Nongata, Acting General Manager, SABC Western Cape. “Participating in campaigns such as Access to Success enables us to reaffirm our commitment of contributing towards moving our nation forward.”
The campaign will include the introduction of a unique and engaging on-air funding event - the Radiothon. “The reality is that there is more to student needs than the affordability of registration and tuition fees,” says Lawrence. “This campaign holistically addresses the needs of students in order to ensure that their road to success is paved by the support of those who depend on them for the further development of our nation and its economy.”
Working Together For A Better Future
The campaign will see SABC TV and the four SABC radio stations (SAFM, Good Hope FM, Umhlobo Wenene, Radio 2000) lend their airwaves and resources to ensure the healthy development of a dialogue that is necessary for all South African to engage around.
UWC students, staff and alumni will have the opportunity to get involved via the Access To Success Phonathon, providing students with the chance to build awareness around alumni relations, and giving alumni the chance to get involved with a current UWC campaign aimed at benefiting its students.
As part of the campaign, staff will be encouraged to sign-up and pledge their support during the month of September.
Given the wide-ranging challenges South African students face, the aim of the campaign is to showcase the importance of community in responding to societal needs. The Access to Success campaign encourages South Africans from all walks of life to support our students in becoming the leaders of the future.
