Archbishop Thabo Makgoba cheque handover

The Archbishop Thabo Makgoba Development Trust (ATMDT) has donated R50,000 to the University of the Western Cape (UWC).

The ATMDT contributed R30,000 to UWC’s Faculty of Dentistry and an additional R20,000 to the Centre for Performing Arts at the UWC campus on 6 May 2015.

The Archbishop Thabo Magkoba Development Trust was established in 2012 as a response to persistent poverty, unemployment and inequality in Southern Africa.

Professor Yusuf Osman, Dean of Dentistry at UWC, said he knows the donation comes from the heart because the Archbishop believes in what UWC stands for.

He explained that the Faculty aims to provide students with unique skills and experience, producing dentists in a province with a high number of people without teeth.

Director at the Centre for Performing Arts, Henriette Weber, said there is a need to make arts and culture relevant, and they will do so by developing community music projects - “Last year it was R15,000 and this year it is R20,000.” She said the donation will enable the CPA to fulfil their wish of offering semester bursaries to students who are in need.

She concluded by saying that as a unit, they are grateful and thankful for the support.

Maropeng Moholoa, Executive Assistant to the Chairman at the ATMDT, said the Trust supports individuals, institutions and communities, especially those in financial distress, to pursue their educational and developmental goals.

He further said that education is one of Trust’s three legacy areas, and that is why they are handing over the cheque at the University. He concluded by saying this is a continuous partnership.
