Back Your Champs: Varsity Shield 2018 Kicks Off At UWC

Back Your Boys: UWC Gets Ready To Be Varsity Shield Champs (Again)

FNB UWC Bushies will face FNB Walter Sisulu University’s rugby boys in an exciting match on home soil on Monday, 19 February 2018 at 18:30 - the beginning of the 2018 FNB Varsity Shield competition.

The game will take place at the UWC Stadium - the same stadium where the team thumped the University of Fort Hare 42-2 in an action-packed final last year, scoring six tries and emerging as the FNB Varsity Shield Champions for 2017.

“It was a magical ride,” says UWC Rugby coach Chester Williams. “This is one part of a journey that will see us being a competitive side once we reach the Varsity Cup.“

Under the leadership of 1995 Rugby World Cup winner, Chester Williams, and fellow Springbok Bolla Conradie, the 2017 season was one of the best ever for the UWC side - they lost only one match.

The UWC outfit is looking to finish the 2018 competition in the same fashion - and a victory this year could earn the team promotion to the Varsity Cup - a chance that only comes along once every two years.

“We’ve shown we have the potential, and with this season together we’re going to be building something really special here at UWC. We’re going to be putting UWC Rugby back on the map, and making students proud of attending UWC and what it stands for.”

Since being established in 1965, UWC RFC has produced a number of players who have not only represented their province and South Africa, but who have also gone on to occupy important administrative and leadership positions in the rugby administration at different levels - people such as SARU legends Gary Boshoff and Irven October.

“Everyone involved at UWC rugby knows about its proud history, and we’re doing our best to live up to that legacy - and build on it as well.”

So come along to the UWC Stadium and watch them do what they do best - and stand a chance to win some of the amazing prizes on offer!

Tickets are available at the UWC Sport Stadium. And don’t forget to check the Varsity Sports website (www.varsitysportsSA.com) for updates on games, as well as player profiles and more...
