Blom is one step closer to becoming an Olympian

“The Special Train” is one step closer to the Olympics

UWC’s own SA Boxing champion, Sinethemba Blom, is one step closer to realising his dream at the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro.

In March 2015 Sinethemba Blom and fellow University of the Western Cape student- Sandiso Kota - traveled to Pretoria to compete in the South African Boxing Trials.

Two-time University Sport South Africa (USSA) Champion Kota did well to reach the semi-finals of the competition, while Blom received a gold medal for his performance. “Our boxers did very well and we were blessed to receive 3 gold medals at the competition,” Blom says.

Blom mentions that his biggest rival at the competition is a tough opponent, but this did not deter him from winning the fight.

“My opponent is known for being ruthless in the ring, so I knew that the only way to beat him would be by means of a knock-out - and I managed to do so in the first round .” he says.

UWC Boxing coach, Ayanda Mapasa,  echoes Blom’s sentiments and believes that he has what it takes to be an Olympian. “We are very proud that Blom beat his opponent in the first round, and this proves the kind of quality UWC has,” he says.

Blom will compete as part of the team selected by the South African National Boxing Organisation (SANABO) to represent South Africa at the Zone 4 competition in April.

Blom will also be competing at various international competitions this year, including the All Africa Games and the AIBA World Boxing Championships.
