Blom mows Maseti down
UWC’s Sinethemba Blom demonstrated why he is a South African Welterweight Champion when he beat Mabhuti Maseti of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology by knockout during a boxing tournament over the weekend.
Their clash was the main bout in an action-packed NUV Cup at UWC Student Centre on Saturday, 29 August 2015, which saw no fewer than 32 junior and elite boxers taking to the ring.
In front of his cheering home supporters, Blom, who successfully defended his SA title in July, took the fight to Maseti from the on-set, forcing him to retreat and resort to jabs and sporadic punches. But when Blom, a third-year BA student, caught his opponent with his powerful blows it was clear which direction the fight would go.
After finding himself on the ground in the first round, Maseti gave in when one of Blom’s punches again landed him on the floor in the second round, and the fight was over.
In other bouts, University Sport South Africa champions Sandiso Kota and Pumlani Nqetho, both from the UWC camp, also claimed TKO victories over Mangaliso and Bulelani Ngondeka, respectively.
The victory of the UWC boxers is another testimony of UWC Boxing Club’s significant contribution to the sport at local, provincial and national levels. The University has placed second at the USSA Championships for the past three years. In 2014, three UWC students were selected into Team South Africa for the World University Boxing Championships.
Boxing authorities are to decide at a later stage which club has won the NUV Cup.
