Careers Expo 2015
The UWC Careers Service recently held its annual Careers Xpo at which almost 90 leading South African recruiters shared information about their companies and offered UWC students tips and advice about internships, jobs and company culture.
“The Careers Xpo allows students to interact with prospective employers to enquire not only about graduate recruitment opportunities, but also enables them to enquire about the skills they would need to develop while at university to become marketable and suitable for employment. The job market is very competitive and students need to prepare therefore by engaging with employers earlier - students can use their time at university to develop and become skillful, thereby being better prepared for the job market and have the competitive edge.” said UWC Careers Service Coordinator, Nazrana Parker.
At the Careers Xpo, UWC students had the opportunity to interact and network with various recruiters as well as UWC alumni who were company representatives. Washeema Gordon, who graduated in March with her BCom-Law degree and who has been working at Old Mutual SA for the past three months, was one of the company’s representatives. She encouraged UWC students to attend career expos like these in order to get a better idea of the company’s requirements for internships and its culture. “The world is competitive and students need to work hard on their future from the start” she said.
One of the prevalent topics that recruiters gave advice to students about at the Careers Expo was relocating to a new city and starting a new job. Hyren Peterson, a HR Business Partner at Unilever’s Marketing Department and a UWC BCom Honours (Industrial Psychology) graduate, says that students should be willing to relocate when they apply for jobs. “I am from Upington, studied at UWC and now I am living and working in Durban...moving to a new city helped me to step out of my comfort zone and helped me to learn and grow as a person,” he said.
The Careers Xpo was hosted by UWC Careers Service. For more information about services offered by UWC Careers Service, students can visit their office: 1st Floor, Student Centre (next to the lift), or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
