"LANGUAGE IS NOT ITIONERS IN SOUTH AFRICA"
The faculty of Humanities at the University of the Free State hosted a two day symposium on foreign language acquisition in South Africa – the aim of this event was to bring together academics all over Southern Africa who specializes within language.
Professor Motinyane, had the honor of representing CASAS at this event;the symposium revolved around the benchmarking and standardization of language teaching and assessment.
This space allowed these teaching professionals to discuss various themes and topics regarding various language disciplines used and taught across South Africa, these languages include: Dutch, Afrikaans, French, German, isiZulu,Sesotho and SA Sign Language. The above mentioned themes included:
1) The best practices for benchmarking foreign language proficiency levels.
2) The standards for foreign language teaching and assessment.
3) The role of technology in language teaching and assessment.
4) Strategies for promoting multilingualism and intercultural communication within the classroom.
5) The challenges and opportunities of teaching foreign languages in Southern Africa.
Apart from the above mentioned discussions which took place, the symposium created a platform where individuals could network, share insights as well as collaborate on strategies to enhance language acquisition practices and research within Southern Africa
CASAS was awarded the honor to showcase some of its work to the symposium attendees – this opportunity brought about exposure; a platform for CASAS to be seen and heard by South Africa; the Centre had the opportunity to meet with the Library Director at the University of the Free State.
