Responding to the need to take vaccination services to those who are still undecided about being vaccinated, the UWC Community Health Sciences Faculty in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Health’s (WCDoH) Northern and Tygerberg substructure, will be involved in two COVID-19 vaccination outreaches in the month of September, one in Bellville and the other in Fisantekraal, located 10km from Durbanville.
The Bellville vaccination outreach will take place on Tuesday, 28 September 2021, outside the UWC Bellville Campus (BMC) in Blanckenberg Road which is near the Middestad Mall and the Bellville Taxi Rank. The Fisantekraal vaccination outreach will take place on Wednesday the 29th of September at the Fisantekraal Multipurpose Centre.
Claudia Swinny, Associate lecturer and Community outreach coordinator for UWC Health Sciences, said UWC is collaborating with WCDoH to bring a mobile vaccination service to the two communities on both days.
The WCDoH mobile unit will be supported by vaccinators and students from UWC. Students will assist with registrations on the EVDS system, answer any questions regarding vaccines as well as distribute health promotion material focused on COVID protocols and provide advice on eating for a healthy immune system.
“The area in Bellville that we are focusing on is very busy with commuters, shoppers, and community members. Fisantekraal has been flagged as one of the areas showing low COVID-19 vaccination rates. We want to bring the vaccination service right to where the people live, work and congregate,” said Swinny.
“It's all about getting people the information they need about COVID-19 vaccinations. We are trying to reach those who are undecided and just need that little bit of extra guidance to get vaccinated.”
The University of the Western Cape is excited to partner with the Western Cape Department of Health on these upcoming vaccination outreaches. For any enquiries please contact Mrs Claudia Swinny on cswinny@uwc.ac.za
