The School of Nursing and CHS Chair for Digital Health Professor Jennifer-Anne Chipps and her academic cohort closed this year in a stellar manner when they hosted an academic delegate from the Nursing Science Department at the University of Turku, Finland from Monday, 4 December 2023 till Thursday, 7th December 2023 at their state-of-the-art Bellville campus. The visiting delegate included Prof Sanna Salantera- Vice Dean of Faculty of Medicine at the University of Turku, Adjunct professor Laura-Maria Peltonen- Ms Maiju Kuusniemi- Project specialist and Mr Desale K Tewelde- PhD student. In the past, Turku University has collaborated with Prof Chipps on numerous projects within the Digital Health discipline.
Upon arrival, the delegates met the School of Nursing academic staff from lecturers, clinical facilitators, and researchers in the Nursing discipline and Digital Health. The delegates were also treated to a CHS facility tour. Staff from the School of Nursing Skills laboratory, Ms Meghann Petersen, Ms Wendy Rosenthal and Dr Jeffrey Hoffman, conducted a tour of the skills laboratory with the visitors commenting on the level of technology and innovation in terms of learning and teaching.
On Tuesday, 5th December 2023, Turku Phd candidate, Mr Desale K Tewelde presented a webinar on “Revolutionising Community CPR: Unveiling Smart Gloves for Enhanced Chest Comprehension Quality in CPR Training and Prehospital Resuscitation”.
On Thursday, 7th December, the collaborating universities concluded the engagement with a certificate awarding ceremony for the newly developed Health innovations course that was offered by University of Turku (Finland) in collaboration with UWC and Moi University (Kenya). We congratulated the 7 students who completed the course namely Prof Crowley, Dr Fillies, Mr A Chikware, Ms N Johannes, Ms M Peterson, Ms N Masete and Ms T Sibindi
The visit also laid a foundation to seal their partnership with the CHS School of Nursing through the signing of an MoU and a Cotutelle for PhD supervision.
