The outstanding 19 CHS students from various programmes including Biokinetics, Community Development, Nursing , Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Psychology and Sport Science descended at Planet Shakers Church to take part in their annual wellness day initiative. This project was spear headed by CHS Student Council members including Marylyn Ndlela, Elzaan Reeves, Zizipho Dunywa, Mieke Siebritz, Kabelo Motsoeneng , Mafuza-Fulele Mvulelo, Emma Carelese, Robyn Du Plessis, Anathi Fatyi, Danelle Wentzel and Fatima Brown.
The vision of the event was to provide basic wellness checks at the Planetshakers location in Century City to over 150 residents from surrounding communities including Joe Slovo, Phoenix, Brooklyn, Rugby and Summer Greens.
Utilising an IPE framework, attendees were able to consult student volunteers from various professions about physical and mental health issues they were facing.Though the event only had a four hour run-time, both the attendees and student volunteers made the most of the opportunity to receive and provide wellness assistance.
The student volunteers from UWC’s CHS faculty were able to provide allied health services such as nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and one on one psychoeducation sessions. Other student volunteers included medical and psychology students from UCT. Partnered with us on site were professional doctors and dietitians, along with representatives from SADAG for Mental Health Month.
