BSc Dietetics Summa Cum Laude student Carinne Adams believes in motivating others through her success - and wants to use her degree to make a difference.
The Bellville resident (she’s lived there all her life) didn’t have an easy journey - especially when it came to financial security. She attended Bellville Primary School and Bellville High School - both with financial exception, as her parents couldn’t pay for her school fees. So when she made it to the University of the Western Cape, she made it her mission to do well.
It paid off: she achieved her dreams in December when she graduated Summa Cum Laude in Dietetics at UWC’s Summer Graduation 2017.
In her own words...
Why did you decide to do Dietetics?
It’s easy to forget how important food is in all our lives. Without enough good food, we will all be starving and dying - food is power and gives you strength. With BSc Dietetics, you learn a lot more about that - it was a difficult course, but an extremely interesting one.
Where do you come from?
I have been living in Bellville since birth, and I live with my parents. My dad is a pensioner and my mother works as an aftercare assistant. We did not have much - but we had what we needed to make things work.
What’s the secret to your success?
My secret to success was simple: attending all my classes all the time. In doing this, it makes studying easier and the understanding is much better. I managed to succeed through focusing on my end goal of achieving a Summa Cum laude. My success is through the grace of God.
What are your future plans?
My future plans are to help save South Africa and its children through nutrition. Many of our country’s problems are related to our diet - I want to help.
