It was a moment of pride and joy as 15 fellows nursing professionals and academics bear witness as new cohort of nursing staff and academics joins the Sigma Thetha International honor Society for Nurses (Sigma)on 18 September 2023, an event held at Stellenbosch University Tygerberg Campus. Amongst the 15 , 11 were from Faculty of Community and Health Sciences’s School of Nursing, these included Catherine Marinda Hoffman, Pelisa Khonco, Ilhaam Noordien, Meghann Grace Gladys Petersen, Mbalenhle Pearl Shange-Goba, Laura Ngwe Tengeh.
Prof Portia Jordan,the Executive Director of Department of Nursing and Midwifery at Stellenbosch University officially welcomed the guests and next of kin of those who graced the event in-person and online and be witness to this special event in the careers of nursing academics from various institutions and specialisations. She emphasized that they have taken a huge step in their professional nursing careers, and this network is much more significant than being a scholar. It is about building research networks, collaborations that speak to scholarship and enhancing the nursing profession. It was also emphasized that what they do as scholars to also transcend to patient care.
The guests were also treated to musical performance by nursing students, Ms H Van Stelten (University of Stellenbosch) and Ms J Losper (University of the Western Cape). Keynote speaker of the event, was Professor Wilson Majee, from University of Missouri, a current Fullbright scholar at the University of the Western Cape. The University of the Western Cape,Cape Peninsula University of Technology and University of Stellenbosch currently have extensive collaborations and shared mutual academic programme with University of Missouri. Professor Majee shared an intimate from humble beginnings journey of his life as a student, academic and professional of the wellness and nursing discipline, as well his experience of being a Fullbright Scholar and the opportunities it presents.
The Alpha Beta Beta chapter Chairperson, Prof RR Marie Modeste welcomed the new inductees into the network and led them in their oath taking ceremony whilst signifying their commitments to abide by the rules, founding vision of the Sigma Theta founders, thus joining the distinguished nursing professional network. The inductees were encouraged to stay engaged in the organisation and enjoy the many benefits that the organisation offers to its members. In closing, Mr L Tokwe, member of the Cape Town chapter, thanked all stakeholders in event and keeping the Alpha Beta Betachapter of Sigma running despite their professional, and personal commitments.

Sigma members include clinical nurses and administrators, academic nurse educators and researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and others working to fulfil the organization’s vision of connected, empowered nurse leaders transforming global healthcare.
