Although the University is unable to host traditional graduation ceremonies due to the pandemic, there is still much to celebrate, and UWC has endeavoured to make this occasion a memorable one for its 900 graduates.
“To the Class of 2020 - you should be very proud of your achievements especially in the year in which UWC celebrates its 60th anniversary. Also be mindful of the sacrifices that those around you have made in order that you could graduate, and this includes the years before the arrival of the pandemic,” said UWC Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tyrone Pretorius.
UWC pioneered virtual graduations when it held its first online ceremony in April this year. With the use of technology, UWC has ensured that students and their families are still able to experience and celebrate this momentous occasion, albeit virtually.
Recognising the challenges these graduates have had to face, UWC Chancellor Archbishop Dr Thabo Makgoba said: “The pandemic has made the final leg of your academic journey so much more difficult than it otherwise would have been, creating a distance between you and those who were there to guide you, and it has asked that you adapt to a new way of learning and teaching, and living.”
Dr Makgoba conferred degrees, diplomas and certificates on 400 undergraduate and 500 postgraduate students. “It is very reassuring that the university community is committed not only to growing further but also to safeguarding the Institution for the many generations of young people to come.”
University Registrar, Dr Nita Lawton-Misra, said, “It is with mixed feelings that I congratulate our newest graduates of the University. While we share in your achievements and revel in your fortitude and grit, like you, I wish we could have been on campus to celebrate in the usual UWC manner which we have always enjoyed. However, try not to allow the ‘new normal’ to diminish your joy and that winning feeling. You are all winners, and I salute each and every one of the Class of 2020.”
