CPA’s New French Horn Sounds A New Tune

The Centre for Performing Arts (CPA) is making good use of its new ensemble uniforms and French horn - thanks to the R65 000 contribution of UWC’s DVC: Academic Prof Vivienne Lawack in July 2016.

The CPA has maximized the impact of Prof Lawack’s contribution. The ensembles bearing the UWC Brand have been assisted in contracting conductors and ensemble directors, as well as purchasing a second-hand French horn - the classic coiled horn with a flared bell most of us imagine when we think of a horned instrument.

Trumpeter Herman de Weer is a natural recipient of this instrument. The transition to  French horn was a seamless one for him since giving it a try in February 2016 - and since then he has already managed to progress to music grade 6 on the instrument. De Weer is also a recipient of the Myra Chapman Education Trust bursary, which covers his tuition costs.

Professor Lawack made the contribution at the first Centre for the Performing Arts certificate ceremony in July - a milestone for the Centre that has devoted itself to establishing a presence in local communities and giving talented young musicians the opportunity to receive instrumental tuition from highly skilled and qualified professional musicians.

The French Horn remains at the Centre for Performing Arts for the use of CPA students.
