Danny Petersen-Drummer boy

Drummer boy, 11, studies at UWC’s Centre for Performing Arts

The University of the Western Cape and Daniel Petersen will make history together.

World renowned drummer, Daniel Petersen, 11, is about to become South Africa’s youngest university student.

Despite being only 11-years old, Daniel made his way to UWC’s classrooms for the first time last week. He studies music at UWC’s Centre for Performing Arts.

Daniel says music means everything to him and if he wants to pursue his dream of becoming the number one drummer or musical director, he needs to learn as much he can.

The young man enjoys chatting to his friends his own age, playing water polo and squash, but when it comes to his music, he says, “Everyone, if they work as hard as me, can achieve anything. You have to put in the hours. If you don’t practise you can’t be number one,” he said.

Daniel comes from a musical family, his father played jazz drums professionally and his grandfather was a musical director.

He says he would love to perform with Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake or Miley Cyrus in the future.
