For Women’s Month, videographer, Jesi Townsend, has compiled a series on Women in Science at the University of the Western Cape’s (UWC) Faculty of Science. Meet the inspiring women who are at the forefront of scientific breakthroughs.
Dr Natasha Ross has been a lecturer at the Department of Chemistry at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) for the past ten years and is known to 'cook up' useful tech in her lab.
She encourages prospective students to study Science, describing it as an adventure of exploration, contributing to the world of Science. “Chemistry is a dynamic field. We design and develop smart nanomaterials capable of efficiently absorbing energy from the sun.
“So, my research niche is focused on producing specialised photoactive nanoparticles to be integrated into innovative solar-charged batteries. These batteries can then be utilised in the medical field, sensors, agriculture, transportation, or to power everyday gadgets.
In this way, we are targeting specific key challenges and addressing global strategic goals. My passion is to advance the development of solar energy technologies that minimise environmental impact and decrease our dependence on non-renewable resources".
