Exams End Successfully – On To UWC 2016
About 400 UWC students per day wrote their exams in January this year, bringing to a close the 2015 academic year, and for some marking the beginning of the next chapter in their lives.

The last semester of 2015 was – as you may have heard – an interesting and exciting time for higher education in South Africa…and amidst all the excitement, some students found themselves unable to write exams as planned.

To help students cope, UWC presented an expanded exam schedule to the class of 2015, with students given the option of writing in November, or December 2015, or in January 2016. This was due to the unfortunate disruptions which required alternative plans for assessments. It also necessitated identifying a safe, off-campus venue, as well as transport to and from this venue for those students who were unable to make personal travel arrangements.

From 6 -18 January an estimated 354 exit-level examinations were written, with a further 355 supplementary exams written from 20 January to 1 February.

An estimated 299 continuous assessments (CAM) were also taken/written in January by those who wanted to improve their CAM or who had received between 40%-49% as their continuous assessment mark.

Exam results will be made available as follows:

•   Results for exams written from 6 January till 1 February will be published on 12 February 2016.

UWC Registrar, Ms. Nita Lawton-Misra, thanked students for their resilience during this exam period.

“We all know it was a very unusual exam period, and it wasn’t easy – but, we acknowledge the perseverance of students perseverance and the dedication of staff who willingly set additional examination papers and spent the festive season marking,” she noted. “We assure you that all our efforts have been focused on allowing staff and students to successfully complete the academic year – and we would also like to congratulate those students who will be graduating in 2016.”

With exams out of the way, it’s time to start welcoming all returning and new students to the 2016 academic year. Online registration has been open from 11 January 2016 and all students  are encouraged to register online as soon as possible. Where relevant, students can also avoid the long queues on campus by calling the the following toll-free number 0800 11 66 00 and obtaining their financial clearances telephonically. This will enable them to register online, hassle-free.  .

The official welcome of all new first-year new undergraduate students will take place on Tuesday, 9 February 2016, with the orientation programme continuing for the rest of the week, when peer-facilitators will be available to assist new students with familiarising themselves with the many student services and facilities available on campus. On-campus registration will take place from Wednesday, 10 February 2016 until Saturday, 13 February 2016 for students requiring assistance with subject choices and financial aid applications. Lectures will begin on Monday, 15 February 2016.

Welcome to 2016! We look forward to meeting you at UWC!
