FNB NWU overpower FNB UWC at home

(Published - 19 February 2019)

Several handling errors from both sides within the first ten minutes of the half set both teams back, but Robert Hunt gave FNB NWU the breakthrough they were pushing for when he dived over the try line to score the first try of the game. Schalk Hugo nailed the conversion to put FNB NWU 7-0 ahead after 13 minutes.

The strategy break proved to be of use to FNB NWU, when in the 20th minute Lungelo Gosa grubbered the ball through for Evardi Boshoff to pick up and dot on the try line for FNB NWU's first seven-point try of the game. Wandi Mazibuko added to FNB UWC's woes when he mauled his way over the try line, giving FNB NWU a 23-0 lead after 25 minutes of play.

Juanre de Klerk scored FNB UWC's first try on the cusp of half time to give FNB UWC a glimmer of hope going into half time, with the score locked at 23-7 in favour of FNB NWU.

FNB NWU came out guns blazing in the second half, when FNB NWU found the try line again off another maul from captain Louis van der Westhuizen. with FNB UWC replied immediately when Juanre de Klerk got his second try of the match, but a missed conversion showed that his attempts proved to be futile with FNB UWC trailing 30-14.

Wian Conradie added to FNB NWU's try tally when scored off the back of a scrum to dampen FNB UWC's spirits, and Schalk Hugo nailed his fifth conversion to take the game to 37-14. FNB UWC continued to test FNB NWU's defence, and eventually Tristan Leyds got his name on the score sheet in the 65th minute, to narrow the lead to 37-21. Unfortunately time ran out for FNB UWC, who head back to Cape Town with their third loss of the campaign.
