The Vice-Chancellor of UWC, Prof. Brian O'Connell, was invited to open UWC’s first
French Day this month, together with the French Ambassador, HE Mrs Elisabeth
Barbier.

Professor Ramesh Bharuthram, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic, started the day’s proceedings by introducing the spectacular growth of UWC over the last 20 years with regard to its scientific research and postgraduate output. UWC is now regarded as one of the best universities in South Africa.

The French Day placed emphasis on the importance of knowledge-sharing between Europe and Africa, specifically in the field of science and technology, which contributes immensely to the strength of the diplomatic relations between France and South Africa.

A series of short presentations, led by researchers collaborating with French institutions or companies, followed the welcoming session.

Approximately 50 students attended the open day. Chrisna Bekker, the representative for Campus France at the French Embassy, presented on bursary opportunities to study in France. Students who wish to apply for these masters and PhD grants can obtain more information onwww.campusfrance.org
