Future Of South African Physics Took Centre Stage At UWC

For six days, the University of the Western Cape (UWC) became a hub of scientific discovery as physicists, researchers and students from across South Africa gathered to exchange ideas, present new research and explore solutions to some of the world's most complex challenges.

It was hosted for a third time by UWC's Department of Physics and Astronomy, and in partnership with iThemba LABS, the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) and the Inter-university Institute for Data Intensive Astronomy (IDIA). The 70th annual South African Institute of Physics (SAIP) Conference brought together established scientists, early-career researchers and postgraduate students in a week-long programme that celebrated scientific excellence while investing in the next generation of physicists. 

More than a forum for presenting research, the conference highlighted the importance of collaboration in advancing scientific knowledge and addressing issues ranging from climate change and renewable energy, to quantum technologies, materials science and astronomy.

Associate professor Reginaldt Madjoe from UWC's Department of Physics and Astronomy said hosting the conference reflected the University’s  commitment to advancing scientific research while creating opportunities for young scientists to engage with leaders in their field.

He said the conference provided an important platform for researchers from different institutions to share knowledge, establish collaborations and inspire future generations of physicists. Bringing together experienced scientists and emerging researchers strengthened South Africa's scientific community and created opportunities for research that could help solve real-world challenges.

One of the defining features of the conference was the strong student presence. Approximately 70% of delegates were honours, master's and doctoral students, many of whom presented their research before audiences that included internationally recognised physicists and leading South African academics.

For Associate professor Sally Macfarlane from UWC's Department of Physics and Astronomy, who chaired the conference's local organising committee, this represented one of the conference's greatest successes.

"The main purpose is to network. It brings together the physics community from across South Africa, including senior researchers, academics and students. Around 70% of the delegates are students, which is fantastic," she said.

She said the conference created invaluable opportunities for students to engage directly with experts whose work had shaped the discipline.

"One of the primary purposes is for those students to engage and network with senior researchers who are at the top of their fields, as well as experts from around the world. It's really the ideal occasion for that."

Prof Macfarlane said one of the most rewarding aspects of the conference was watching young researchers confidently present their work to internationally respected scientists.

"What stood out for me was seeing students present their research while world-class researchers sat in the audience, listened carefully and provided valuable feedback. That interaction is incredibly important for developing the next generation of physicists."

The conference also demonstrated how physics continues to influence everyday life. Through keynote lectures, panel discussions and technical presentations, delegates explored research with the potential to shape technological innovation, environmental sustainability and scientific advancement.

Among the highlights was a special keynote lecture by internationally acclaimed physicist, Prof Malik Maaza, who explored emerging technologies and the science behind cloud seeding. His presentation challenged delegates to consider how scientific innovation could help address global environmental and technological challenges, while encouraging collaboration across disciplines.

Beyond the formal programme, the conference created opportunities for researchers to establish new partnerships, discuss future projects and strengthen networks that will continue long after the final session. These conversations underscored the importance of collaboration in advancing scientific discovery and ensuring that research responds to society's needs.

For UWC, hosting the landmark conference reinforced the University ‘s role as a leading centre for scientific research and postgraduate studies.
