Prof Glenda Gray, Prof Iwuoha (holding Award), Dr Ulrich Minnaar (Distribution Research Solutions Manager at Eskom Holdings) and Mr Mmboneni Muofhe (Deputy Director-General: Socio-economic Innovation Partnerships, DSTI)Iwuoha’s groundbreaking research, which recently earned him the prestigious 2024 NSTF-South32 Engineering Research Capacity Development Award, could play a key role in addressing the country’s energy challenges and supporting renewable energy systems.
Prof Iwuoha’s work focuses on improving the performance of lithium-ion batteries, a critical component for storing renewable energy. By using Europium, a rare earth element, to enhance battery efficiency, his research could help reduce electricity shortages and provide long-term energy security. This is particularly vital for South Africa, which has endured over 16 years of rolling blackouts.
In celebration of International Battery Day on 18 February, the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) highlighted Prof Iwuoha’s achievements. His research advances battery technology and aims to improve lives in rural African communities through low-cost solar cells and disease diagnostic tools.
With over 25 years of experience, Prof Iwuoha is a globally recognised electrochemist and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He is also the founder and director of SensorLab, a state-of-the-art research facility at UWC that has trained over 200 postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows since its establishment in 2002.
Prof Iwuoha’s vision extends beyond academia. He hopes his work will translate into practical solutions that benefit humanity, particularly in underserved communities. “I’ve always been driven to find ways that could benefit humanity or offer solutions to real-world problems,” he said.
The NSTF-South32 Awards, often referred to as the “Science Oscars of South Africa,” recognise outstanding contributions to science, engineering, and innovation. Prof Iwuoha’s award underscores the transformative potential of his research in tackling one of the country’s most pressing challenges: energy security.
As the world shifts toward renewable energy, Prof Iwuoha’s work on efficient energy storage systems could pave the way for a more sustainable future in South Africa and beyond.
