The University of the Western Cape's (UWC) Human Resources Department hosted its Annual General Staff Orientation on campus for new employees over three days.
The orientation programme is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the UWC executive and its operational portfolios as well as insight into the Institutional Operating Plan (IOP) of the university and creates a platform to network with colleagues.
The orientation programme is essential to the induction process and sets the foundation for a successful tenure at UWC. It is also linked to the university’s goal as stated in the IOP to be “an employer of choice”.

On the first day of the orientation, Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tyrone Pretorius delivered the official welcome and opening address. He assured new staff members that they had made the best decision in joining the UWC family and highlighted some of the university’s achievements. The presenters also echoed the sentiment that the new staff members have made the right choice by joining UWC. They were reminded that they have a crucial role to play in helping students overcome challenges and achieve greater success.
Altogether 90 new staff members attended the orientation, including those appointed in 2021 who missed out on their staff orientation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The group consisted of a mix of academic and professional support staff who gathered at the School of Public Health.
During the three days, new staff were given insight into the university's operations, including its rich history and future plans. In addition, a tour of the main campus was arranged, which provided new staff with a deeper appreciation of the university’s history and achievements.
Mr Meko Magida, Executive Director: Human Resources, also highlighted the role of Human Resources and the planned activities to enhance the employee experience. He invited staff to participate in developmental opportunities that are available to them and to contribute to the growth of the university.
