University of the Western Cape alumnus Joseph Lumbahe has made history by becoming  the first to be appointed within the specialised Microsoft Global AI Team at Microsoft South  Africa as a Senior Microsoft AI Technology Specialist for the AI Application Development  domain. 

This prestigious role underscores Lumbahe's exceptional skill and dedication to advancing  artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Lumbahe’s academic journey flourished at the  University of the Western Cape (UWC), where he nurtured his passion for AI and Machine  Learning under the mentorship of esteemed Natural Sciences faculty, including Professor  Mehrdad Ghaziasgar. “I give kudos to Professor Ghaziasgar, whose guidance and support  were instrumental in shaping my technical foundation and igniting my commitment to  excellence and innovation,” he said. UWC's commitment to excellence and innovation gave  him the tools and confidence to shift and drive his career forward.  

In his new role at Microsoft, the UWC alumnus will leverage cutting-edge AI technologies to  develop solutions addressing real-world challenges across various industries. He will be a technical solution expert and collaborate with strategic stakeholders to develop and deploy  AI-powered application prototypes, innovatively leveraging the latest development  technologies to integrate Microsoft AI Services with thought leadership. His work aims to  showcase the transformative potential of AI, underscoring his deep expertise and the trust  Microsoft places in his ability and his team to drive impactful solutions.  

Earlier this year, he was appointed as a Regional Ambassador for the South African  Artificial Intelligence Association (SAAIA), an industry professional body focused on promoting the advancement of responsible AI. He serves as the industry's voice,  propelling the adoption of responsible AI across South Africa.  

Additionally, he serves as a Non-Executive Board Director at the African Energy  Empowerment Youth Council (AEEYC), where he leverages his leadership to drive the council towards achieving new heights in the energy sector. His role in AEEYC highlights his commitment to utilising technology for broader societal impact.
