There was an emotional display of gratitude towards the University of the Western Cape (UWC) management at the official opening of the new kiosks at the Unibell residences.

This week, vendors - who were handed their keys to operate from the three residences - thanked the University management for affording them the opportunity to earn a stable income for their families.

The kiosk operators - selected through a procurement process - are from the surrounding community of Belhar. They are Nadia de Klerk, Brenda Hartnick and Sipho Vanga, and each will man a kiosk.

De Klerk singled out the Business Development Office Director, Mr Sujit Bhagattjee, supported by Ms Laurian Cupido. She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the Unibell Kiosk endeavour.

Furthermore, she thanked the sponsors and her fellow kiosk operators for their support.

Professor Matete Madiba, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Development and Support at UWC, said: “The idea of kiosks was initiated to keep students safe and minimise the need to leave the university residence after hours. With the convenience of a kiosk at the residences, our students will not need to leave the premises to buy necessities they normally find at the shop a few minutes away. We want our students to get access to things they need as quickly and safely as possible.”

She wished all the partners every success and that all would go well. The residence has a capacity of 2700 bed spaces and 900 bed spaces per precinct, meaning that each tenant can potentially serve 900 students.

For now, the operational hours will be from Monday to Friday - 8 am to 6 pm and Saturday and Sunday 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. The facilities will be closed on public holidays based on the student footprint and student reviews.
