Wesahl Agherdien, now Domingo has been appointed as the new Dean of Wits law school with effect from 1 January 2018.

The SARChi Chair in Multi-level Government, Law and Policy, currently held by Nico Steytler, has been renewed for another 5 years.

The DOI has started with a new project to determine an appropriate framework for the appointment and dismissal of board members of state-owned enterprises. The project is funded by the Open Society Foundation – South Africa.

The DOI is currently hosting two doctoral researchers: Fabrizio Crameri is from Switzerland (will be with the DOI until December 2018) and Adriano Dirri is from Italy (will be with the DOI until April 2018).

Prof Gerhard Werle, Extraordinary Professor UWC, and Professor of Law at Humboldt University, Berlin will spend the next three months at UWC to teach in the LLM programme “Transnational Criminal Justice and Crime Prevention – An International and African Perspective” of the South African-German Centre for Transnational Criminal Justice.

The Dean’s distinguished lecture will take place on 4 September 2018 and will be presented by Judge Bernard Ngoepe.

Brighton Mupangavanhu and Fareed Moosa graduated with doctorates from UCT and UWC respectively; Fareed Moosa was awarded the prize for second place in the national tax thesis competition held by South African Institute of Professional Accountants. Allison Anthony will receive a doctoral degree from Stellenbosch University in the coming weeks. 

On 7 December the Faculty had a double book launch for “Universal Jurisdiction in respect of international crimes: Theory and practice in Africa” by Angelo Dube and “The Regional integration of African Trade Mark Laws: Challenges and possibilities” by Yeukai Mupangavanhu.

Precious Ndlovu’s monograph 'Competition Law of South Africa' will be published by Wolters Kluwer in March 2018.

Werner Scholtz is hosting a doctoral student, Hendrik Kurth, from the University of Göttingen, Germany who is a participant in the animal welfare program

Two new Extraordinary Prof have been appointed: Christopher Mbazira (Makerere Univ) Duncan French (Lincoln)

Francois du Toit and Werner Scholtz have both received B ratings from the NRF
