UWC player helps SA win
UWC Ladies star striker, Leandra Smeda, scored four goals to help the South African senior women’s national team, Sasol Banyana Banyana, demolish Comoros 13-0 in the first leg of the African Women’s Championship qualifier match.
The victory at the Stade Said Mohamed Cheikh Stadium on Friday 23 May 2014 has put Banyana Banyana in the driving seat to progress to the next round of qualifiers when the return leg takes place in early June.
The African Women's Championship is a biennial competition in women's football for national teams which belong to the Confederation of African Football. The 2014 edition is scheduled to be held in Namibia from 11 to 25 October, and is also a qualification tournament for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, with the top three teams qualifying for the finals in Canada.
Smeda, a versatile mid-cum-striker, scored one goal in the first half and netted three in the second as Banyana Banyana fans cheered her on.
A food technology student at the neighbouring Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Smeda hails from Velddrif in the West Coast and is comfortable with the ball on both feet and playing on either side of the field.
