Ahead of the General Election on 29 May 2024, South Africa faces the possibility of coalition governments at National and Provincial level.
In August 2023, members of political parties, faith organisations, civil society, academics and students converged at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) for the first-ever National Dialogue on Coalition Governments.
This two day event was convened by Deputy President and leader of Government Business, Paul Mashatile, and it aimed to establish a national framework to guide the management of coalition governments as they become a reality in all spheres of government.
"The word (hope) has reared its head regularly in recent months as life – on all fronts – continues to hurl burdensome boulders at everyone. Most of us emphatically live with the hope that this country will overcome all its hardships. Others have abandoned all hope of a better tomorrow. Hope is a powerful emotion, a mighty tool that gives rise to greatness; it affects change and sparks power," said UWC Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tyrone Pretorius in his welcome address at the national dialogue.
Professor Cherrel Africa from the UWC Department of Political Science discussed the likelihood of coalition arrangements after the General Election with Cape Talk’s John Maytham.
Recent polls have indicated that the incumbent governing political party in the Western Cape might not be able to retain its outright majority. Prof Africa discussed this and many other election issues with Maytham.
