At 15, following a brutal sexual assault, she made a crucial decision - not to allow the perpetrator to control her destiny. At 37, after seemingly losing everything she had fought so hard to build, she recognised the power of choice and change. At 51, after surviving a second sexual assault, she refused to remain silent, amplifying her voice from a local whisper to a global roar.
Lynn reflects on this transformative mindset, stating, "It takes the same amount of soil to dig a grave as it does to plant a garden. It was when I could have been buried that I chose to be planted. We all have this choice, to choose how anything affects us. I chose passion over pity and power over pain."
Through these experiences, Lynn mastered self-leadership as a concept before she came across it as an integral construct of leadership development. Her hardships deepened her authenticity, honesty and vulnerability, which now define her as a transformational leader. She does not just teach leadership - she embodies it. Lynn’s time at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) was pivotal. It provided her with a strong sense of belonging, which fuelled her confidence. Holding student leadership roles as a Peer Counsellor, Orientation Leader, and Arts Faculty Leader (now Community and Health Sciences) brought her into contact with Prof. Edith Vries, a mentor who mirrored the future version of herself. This relationship affirmed her ambitions and aspirations. She is also one of the inaugural members of UWC’s Ambassador Programme, a prestigious initiative aimed at fostering leadership and global influence among alumni.
Having worked in diverse industries, Lynn believes in principle-centred leadership. She upholds self-leadership, arguing that true leadership is defined by character, not titles. Excellence, she insists, is not a habit but a lifestyle. She champions leadership rooted in spiritual and emotional intelligence, which fosters transformational impact. She believes credibility, built on integrity, is essential for creating a lasting legacy.
As the founder of SHE COUNTS, Lynn is empowering women and girls on the African continent. She recognises the inherited challenges of patriarchy and systemic oppression. She sees herself as a disruptor of social dysfunction and a champion of dreams, advocating for those whose voices have been historically silenced.
Lynn has received 17 global awards, including the Women Appreciating Women Hall of Fame (London, 2021) and the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Christian Women’s Entrepreneurial Network of Africa (October 2024). However, she views these accolades as symbolic, belonging to the countless unsung heroes working tirelessly without recognition.
