“Today I stand before you all not only as a student, but as a voice of many whose dreams have been nourished by your generosity. You are like imvule entswasahlobo — spring rain that falls gently on dry soil, allowing new life to rise. You have given us hope. You have watered our hopes. And now, we grow with prosperity … It says that you are seen, you are worthy, you belong.”

These were the powerful words of Phelokazi Sizani, a second-year BA Sociology and Linguistics student, speaking on behalf of her peers during a laptop handover ceremony that the University of the Western Cape (UWC) recently hosted — an event marking a meaningful step in supporting student success through digital inclusion, with laptops donated specifically to the Faculty of Arts and Humanities as a targeted investment in students’ academic growth.

Professor Anesh Singh, Director of Institutional Advancement, welcomed the donors, the Padayachee family, and highlighted their commitment to transformation: “Solv Investment’s mission is simple — they want to make a difference, to create sustainable opportunities for the youth in driving real and long-lasting transformation. The family wanted to give back, and UWC was chosen as the beneficiary for these laptops.”

Mr Pranav Padayachee, representing Solv Investments, spoke about the deeper meaning behind the donation: “Today is not just about handing over laptops, it’s about unlocking possibilities for everyone. A laptop is just a tool — you are the powerhouse. As you rise and your circumstances change, remember the version of you who once needed a helping hand and become that hand for someone else. That’s it, just pay it forward.”

For many students, the occasion carried profound significance. Sizani was visibly moved as she reflected on her journey from Kwanaboma, a small village in the Eastern Cape.

“This is big. This is amazing. It’s like I’m dreaming. But I’m doing it for all the young girls who come from where I come from. This is to say it is possible when you have the right, amazing people around you,” she said.

She went on to emphasise the deep connection she carries with her community: “Everywhere I go, I carry the wisdom of the women in my village with me. I can’t wait to tell them first — they will be delighted.”

The event host, Professor Fiona Moolla, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, underscored the significance of the handover for student success. “This is much more than just a device. I think you’ve made their lives a lot more convenient and you’re opening up their academic future through this gift. It’s clear to me that your family brings more than just laptops. You also share with us the importance of family and family values.”

The ceremony concluded with the formal presentation of laptops to students, and group photographs to commemorate the occasion.

This initiative reflects UWC’s ongoing dedication to fostering inclusive education and ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, have the tools they need to thrive.
