Muslim Personal Law Unit Hosts Insightful Webinar on Muslim Judicial Council's Role in South Africa

On 29 August 2024, the Muslim Personal Law Unit (MPLU) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) Faculty of Law hosted its third webinar of the year, continuing its vital discourse on Muslim Personal Law in South Africa. This series has become a key platform for addressing critical issues within the community, and this session was no exception.

The webinar featured a distinguished guest, Shaykh Riad Fataar, President of the Muslim Judicial Council of South Africa (MJC SA). Shaykh Fataar shared invaluable insights into the MJC’s role and functions concerning matters of Muslim Personal Law, offering a comprehensive overview of the Council’s processes, challenges, and significant contributions to the South African legal landscape. His expertise provided clarity on how the MJC (SA) navigates complex legal questions while upholding Islamic principles in a diverse society.

With the webinar attracting nearly 70 registrants, this underscores the strong and sustained interest in Muslim Personal Law and its implications for South Africa. The engaging question-and-answer session that followed Shaykh Fataar's presentation reflected a high level of involvement from the participants, with thought-provoking queries from the community sparking an enriching dialogue.

The MPLU remains committed to fostering discussions that not only increase understanding but also advance the development of Muslim Personal Law in the country. By hosting events such as these, the Unit continues to serve as a bridge between Islamic law and the evolving legal frameworks of South Africa.
