Image: SuppliedThe University of the Western Cape (UWC) welcomes the appointment of Professor Premesh Lalu to the Academic Senate of the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS). This appointment underscores his dedication to research, graduate mentorship, and advancing international collaboration.
Professor Lalu, Researcher and former Director of the Centre for Humanities Research (CHR) at UWC, joins two additional distinguished scholars as recent appointments to the Senate. The senate of eight members plays a vital role in upholding the Collegium’s intellectual standards and international outlook.
Lalu holds the NRF/British Academy SA-UK Bilateral Digital Humanities Chair in Culture and Technics and serves on the international advisory board of the Leuphana Institute for Advanced Studies, Encounters South African International Documentary Festival, and as juror for the Akademie Schloss Solitude. He has previously served as an advisory board member at the Jackman Humanities Centre at the University of Toronto, Global Disconnect at Ludwig Maximilians University, the Long Room Hub for Arts and Humanities Research at Trinity College Dublin, and the International Consortium for Humanities Centres and Institutes.
Prof. Lalu’s appointment to the SCAS senate reflects the growing global stature of UWC’s humanities scholarship and the impact of the CHR’s work. It will enable him to champion the work of institutions and researchers from the Global South while facilitating international collaboration at UWC.
The Academic Senate advises on institutional matters and ensures that SCAS programmes maintain the highest scholarly standards, and a sustained global commitment. Premesh Lalu’s appointment to the SCAS senate highlights the stellar research of UWC’s academic community and its significant role in global knowledge production.
