"I'm committed to this degree. I want to rest, but for now, I'm giving it my all." These stoic words from a third-year Sociology student capture the dedication and resilience of many students at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).

As the first term draws to a close, students across campus are working tirelessly, pushing through long study sessions, practicals, and assignments with unwavering determination. From science students spending late nights in labs to humanities postgraduates immersing themselves in extensive readings, one thing is evident: UWC students are making their best effort.

Balancing academics with other responsibilities is no easy feat, but students are finding ways to persevere. For third-year BSc Chemical Science student Noxolo Ngxongo, this term has come with additional challenges: "It's been a demanding time, especially since I recently learned that I need to secure my funding. But I'm staying positive and focused on keeping my marks high for my honours next year."

Despite the pressures, she remains motivated, exploring ways to manage both her studies and scholarship applications. Though she won’t be able to travel home to KwaZulu-Natal over the break due to financial constraints, she remains hopeful and determined.

The energy on campus has certainly shifted from the excitement from the start of the academic year—when students showcased their best outfits on TikTok and participated in lively campus activities—to a more focused atmosphere. Hoodies, tracksuit pants, and well-worn Crocs have become the go-to attire as students power through the final stretch. But this shift is not just about fatigue; it’s a testament to the hard work and commitment of UWC students.

For many, the upcoming break serves as a motivating force. A first-year BCom student shared: "I'm looking forward to the break so I can see my family and recharge for the next term."

Others are embracing self-care and learning to be kinder to themselves amidst the academic demands. A first-year Bachelor of Arts student reflected: "I’m trying to balance school with taking breaks when needed. If I don’t get the marks I expected, I remind myself that adjusting from high school to university is a process. On weekends, I allow myself to rest when I can."

As the final weeks of term one unfold, students are demonstrating resilience and perseverance. The countdown to a well-deserved break has begun, and with each deadline met, they are one step closer to some well-earned rest.

To all UWC students navigating this intense period: the finish line is near, and soon, textbooks will be set aside for relaxation, deadlines will be replaced with deep breaths, and the hard work of this term will be rewarded with well-earned rest.

Hou moed (stay strong) and keep striving. You’ve got this!
