Registrar Applauds Administrative Excellence and Innovation at UWC
The Empowering Administrative Excellence (EAE) Programme, jointly presented by the Office of the Registrar and the Human Resources Department, continues to foster professional growth, innovation, and leadership across the University of the Western Cape (UWC). This transformative initiative encourages staff to lead from their current positions, cultivating a culture of service, excellence, and institutional pride.
Congratulations are extended to Hirschelle Zimri and Keathélia Sapto on their successful completion of the EAE programme and on their inspiring, forward-thinking project presentations.
One Tap, One Campus: Unlocking the Future of UWC
Hirschelle and her team presented a project titled “One Tap, One Campus: The Journey to Digital Access – Unlocking the Future of UWC.”
“The One Tap, One Campus initiative envisions transforming how students, staff and visitors access and interact with the University of the Western Cape. By transitioning from traditional physical access cards to digital, smart and secure systems, this project positions UWC as a forward-thinking institution that embraces innovation and inclusivity.
At its core, the project aims to:
Digitising Business Cards for a Sustainable Future
Keathélia and her team presented on “Digitising Business Cards Using vCards (Virtual Contact Files) Embedded in QR Codes.”
Currently, the larger campus community utilizes printed business cards. While this is a professional networking tool, there are certain drawbacks. The project proposes making use of a digital alternative: digitizing business cards using vCards embedded in QR codes. A QR code (on email signatures, presentations, office doors, or even a once-off printed card) can be scanned with a smartphone, instantly saving the contact information into the recipient’s phone, eliminating manual input while enabling far richer information to be shared. This reduces cost, improves accessibility, and supports environmentally friendly practices, and reflects a larger shift toward sustainability, technological convenience and global digital adoption.
This initiative represents more than a digital solution, it reflects UWC’s ongoing commitment to innovation, sustainability, and efficiency in professional practice.
The Acting Manager of the Faculty of Law, Hazel Jeftha, has been a strong supporter of the administrative staff’s professional development journey. Her belief in the importance of empowering support staff reflects the Faculty’s commitment to cultivating leadership, confidence, and growth at every level. Her presence and encouragement throughout this great initiative made a meaningful difference. Support from managers is vital in building a workplace culture grounded in collaboration and shared purpose.
The Registrar commended all participants for their dedication to growth, innovation, and service excellence. She noted that graduates of the EAE Programme return to their departments with fresh perspectives, practical tools, and a renewed sense of purpose, ready to lead positive change.
“Your growth strengthens our collective capacity to serve, to innovate, and to lead with purpose. Continue to inspire those around you.”
— Dr. Nita Lawton-Misra, Registrar

At its core, the project aims to:
- Simplify access to campus spaces and services through mobile app ID’s, biometrics or QR codes; enhance security and efficiency with reliable, technology-driven solutions;
- Promote inclusivity by starting with a pilot rollout for students with disabilities and visitors, ensuring accessibility for all;
- Reduce costs and environmental impact by minimizing reliance on plastic cards.”
