UWC is proud that another of its alumni has been appointed as a judge.
On 18 November 2019 the President announced the appointment of 15 judges to various divisions of the High Court. Two of these are UWC alumni. Shanaaz Christine Mia was appointed as a Judge in the Gauteng Division of the High Court, with effect from 1 January 2020. She will join John Murphy, former Associate Professor at the UWC Law Faculty, and former UWC law lecturer Fayeeza Kathree-Setiloane, who both serve as judges in the same division.
Mia completed her BA (1989) and LLB (1995) degrees at the University of Cape Town and her LLM degree (2002) at the University of the Western Cape. Her LLM research paper with the title, ‘The child's voice in the Hague Convention”, was completed under the supervision of Prof Julia Sloth-Nielsen.
Mia worked as a public defender for Legal Aid SA (1995-1996), as Professional Assistant at Y Ebrahim & Associates (1997), and as a Family Advocate (1998-2002). She served as District Court Magistrate from 2002 to 2019, and was appointed as Senior Magistrate from February 2019, where she served as Head of the Family Court Section. Since 2009, Mia has acted as judge in the Land Claims Court as well as in the Free State, Gauteng and Western Cape divisions of the High Court.
