Six UWC Academics join ASSAF
Six Academics from the University of the Western Cape Professors will be inaugurated and welcomed at the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAF); these six newly appointed members of ASSAF will bring the number of UWC Academics associated with ASSAF to nine.
The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) is the official national academy of science and represents the country in the international community of science academies.
ASSAF will welcome 31 leading scientists as new Members at its annual Awards Ceremony in Stellenbosch on 14 October 2015, bringing the total Membership to 472.
New Members are elected each year by the full existing Membership. Membership of the Academy is a great honour and is in recognition of scholarly achievement. Members are the core asset of the Academy and give of their time and expertise voluntarily in the service of society.
This group of South African Academics at ASSAF will be joined by the likes of Professor Tamara Shefer who is a Teaching and Learning Deputy Dean at the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Shefer is professor of Women’s and Gender.
Prof. Julian May, a Director at the Institution for Social Development at the Economics and Management Science Faculty at UWC.
Prof. Pricilla Baker, is a Professor specialising in Analytical Electrochemistry at the Faculty of Natural Science at the University of the Western Cape, she is also co-leader of SensorLab, an electrochemistry research platform in Chemistry department, which focuses on fundamental and applied electrodynamics of materials and sensors.
Prof Christopher Stroud, Head of Department at the Centre for Multilingualism and Diversity Research situated at the Faculty of Arts at the University of the Western Cape. His current research interests focus on practices and ideologies of multilingualism in social and politically transforming economies in Southern Africa.
Prof Uma Mesthrie, is a Professor at the Faculty of Arts and has worked at the University of Durban-Westville, University of Cape Town and has been at the University of the Western Cape for the last 18 years where she has also served as Deputy Dean of Research in the Arts faculty.
Prof Ernst Conradie who is a Senior Professor in the Department of Religion and Theology at the University of the Western Cape where he teaches systematic theology and ethics.
The already existing members from UWC include Professor Rhamashwar Bharuthram, former Deputy Vice Rector, Professor Duncan Brown, Dean of Arts at UWC and newly appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Professor Frans Swanepoel.
Apart from being the former UWC Deputy VC, Professor Bharuthram was previously Dean of Science at the University of the Witwatersrand.
Professor Brown is Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of the Western Cape. He has published widely in the field of South African literary and cultural studies.
Professor Frans Swanepoel is member of the Academy of Science of SA (ASSAf), and currently leads its consensus study to revitalise agricultural education and training in South Africa.
