Student Awards Nomination Form 2023

Dear Students,

All UWC students and staff are invited to nominate students in the categories listed below for the 2023 Annual Student Development and Support (SDS) Student Achievement Awards.

Closing date for nominations is midnight on 26 September 2023.

Kindly click on the link below to complete the nomination form.  You are able to nominate students in any of the following categories:

1.  Student Governance
2.  Student Leadership
3.  Student Tutoring and Building Academic Skills
4.  Student Orientation
5.  Work study Programme
6.  UWC Brand Ambassador

The following additional criteria apply to candidates:

•  Demonstrates the development of UWC Graduate Attributes
•  Demonstrates ethical leadership and conduct
•  Embraces the idea of a living and learning environment at UWC
•  Committed to the ethos of Student Development and Support
•  Maintains a good working relationship with students and staff
•  Has a record of good standing with students and staff
•  Has a clear sense of accountability and responsibility
•  Demonstrates creativity and initiative
•  Has an exemplary disciplinary record
•  Is an academic achiever and is in good academic standing

Please consider the following terms and conditions (T&Cs) when compiling a motivation:

1. Read the categories carefully before applying;
2. The motivation for why the student is eligible for the category is embedded in the nomination form. Please complete it with as much detail and specific evidence as it relates to the criteria for the category. A motivation must be based only on what the nominee has achieved, and evidence thereof must be clearly outlined in the motivation. Plans for the future will not be considered. Examples of evidence include but are not limited to details about any awards, accolades and specific projects that the student has been actively driving or involved in for the 2023 academic year;
3. A nominee has to consent to his/her nomination before the nomination form is deemed complete;
4. A vaguely written motivation will not be considered;
5. No nomination will be accepted after the closing date;
6. The selection panel reserves the right to verify the information provided;
7. A nominee must be a student in 2023;
8. The judges' decision is final.
 
Awards Category Criteria
1. Student Governance Students in this category are:
 
• Actively engaged in student governance structures, projects and events which contribute towards a campus environment conducive to academic and personal-social development of students.
• Has demonstrated an excellent articulation of the role, duty and responsibility as set out by the student governance structure at UWC.
• Can show evidence of having successfully planned, and organised leadership projects/events/initiatives which have been of benefit to the student community at large.
• Has created platforms to facilitate meaningful engagements with the student community on relevant issues that demonstrated an understanding of diversity and inclusivity.
• Has demonstrated an ability to act as a responsible role model which is present in their overall demeanour and engagement as a student leader
• Has innovatively & positively engaged technology in reaching out to the student community.
2. Student Leadership Students in this category are:
 
• Actively engaged in departmental structures, projects and events which contribute towards a campus environment that is conducive to the academic, personal and social development of students
• Has demonstrated an excellent articulation of the role, duty and responsibility of being a student leader at UWC
• Can show evidence of having successfully planned and implemented a project/event/initiative that was relevant and met the needs of the student community.
• Can demonstrate evidence of being socially responsive to the needs of the student community and created opportunities/initiatives/projects/events that responded to a need and was based on an understanding of the diversity of the student community
• Has demonstrated an excellent track record of building relationships and networking with fellow students/organisations/departments to build collaborative projects which benefitted others in the student community.
• Has innovatively & positively engaged technology in reaching out to the student community.
3.Student Tutoring and Building Academic Skills Students in this category are:
 
• Engaged in a UWC tutoring programme
• Has demonstrated an excellent grasp of the fundamentals of peer tutoring 
• Can demonstrate innovative tutoring methods that have benefitted tutees at UWC.
• Has demonstrated an ability to go beyond what was expected in the tutoring relationship to help the tutee to come to terms with complex content.
• Has demonstrated an ability to plan and implement an initiative/project or event that contributed to the building of academic skills amongst tutees. 
• Has used technology innovatively & positively to assist the tutees in the learning process.
4. Student Orientation Students in this category have:
 
• Contributed towards the achievement of the Orientation Programme at UWC
• Has an excellent grasp of the principles which underlie orientating new students
• Has demonstrated a track record of facilitating processes which helped first years to broker important new relationships at university
• Has gone the extra mile to ensure the successful implementation of the first-year orientation programme
• Has innovatively & positively engaged technology in reaching out to the student community.
5. Work-study Students in this category have:
 
• Gone beyond the expected duties as per the work study contract with the respective department
• Has demonstrated an excellent understanding of their role and function in assisting the departments to achieve their core business and have aligned their personal demeanour accordingly
• Has demonstrated a growing sense of professionalism in their role and this can be ascertained by specific examples of instances where this was evidenced. 
6. UWC Brand Ambassador Students in this category have:
 
• Performed remarkably at national and/or international level and the achievement has placed UWC on the map
• Has demonstrated outstanding leadership
• Has demonstrated that they are socially conscious and this is reflected in their achievements and work
• Their projects/initiatives/events have relevance to the greater community and is of benefit to others
• Has used technology innovatively & positively to put UWC on the map.
