University of the Western Cape (UWC) Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Tyrone Pretorius, together with UWC’s Executive, hosted the Swedish delegation on Friday, 18 March 2016 in the Rectors Boardroom.

Nine Vice Chancellor’s from the different institutions of higher learning in Sweden travelled to South Africa in an attempt to strengthen the existing institutional partnership, increase mobility and find new opportunities for new partnerships which will allow for academic collaborations and exchange programmes.

Prof Johan Sterte from Luleå University of Technology gave an overview of the Swedish higher Education system, reporting that there are 48 Universities in Sweden, both private and public.

He added that Sweden currently hosts 62 students from South Africa, while they have 39 students studying in South Africa. Universities represented on the day included Kristianstad University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Linköping University, Lulea University of Technology, Mid Sweden University, Stockholm University, Stockholm University of the Arts, Södertörn University and Uppsala University.

Giving an overview of the UWC Academic project were Prof Tyrone Pretorius, Institutional Planner and Executive Assistant to the Rector, Mr Larry Pokpas, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic, Prof Vivienne Lawack, and Executive: Special Projects, Prof Ramesh Bharuthram.

Prof Vivienne Lawack said that the student protests made them (Executive) rethink how decisions are made, and also the role UWC plays nationally and hopefully globally, with the aim of increasingly viewing our institution as a connected university.
