Athlete of the month
UWC rugby star Mthetheleli ‘Tazz’ Fuzani’s sterling performance this season, which saw him selected into the Western Province Currie Cup team, has been rewarded with the August 2013 Athlete of the Month accolade.
The award was introduced by the Department of Sports Administration to honour the achievements of outstanding sportspeople as part of the Athlete Support Programme. Each sport administrator nominates an athlete who has excelled during a specific month, and nominations are then collated and assessed according to the individual’s achievement.
Fuzani, a bulky lock, produced several stand-out performances in the Varsity Shield that contributed to UWC reaching the final of the competition early this year. He has since played six games for the Western Province Vodacom side, and made his Currie Cup debut when the Western Province beat Blue Bulls 29-18 at home on 14 September 2013.
UWC director of rugby and sport development, Peter De Villiers, said that Fuzani is one of many players from the University who can reach the top.
“We are very excited to see players like him reach the heights they want in life. We are proud of them and we know that many more such players will come from here,” he said.
The first award was given to UWC Ladies Football Club players Jermaine Seoponsewe, Kaylin Swart and Vuyo Mkhabela whose performances caught the eye of women’s national team (Banyana Banyana) selectors to represent the country in the 12 Nations CYPRUS Women’s Cup. The trio also represented Team South Africa in University Sport South Africa team which reached the semi-finals of this year’s World Student Games, known as Summer Universiade, in Kazan, Russia.
Then, Fuzani’s teammate, Freddie Muller, who also took part in the Summer Universiade, got the nod for helping FNB UWC to reach the final of the FNB Varsity Shield Rugby competition, in which he was the star performer and received the Player that Rocks award.
Rodwell Ndlovu also grabbed the spotlight when he shone in the inaugural Varsity Athletic competition and also represented Team South Africa in this year’s World Student Games.
UWC swimming sensation, Robyn Ferguson, another Summer Universiade participant, was also honoured with the Athlete of the Month award.
