On 16 October, UWC held a successful food packing event that was supported by Gift of the Givers. The campaign aimed to highlight the plight of food insecurity, not only at UWC but also at public higher education institutions across South Africa. While doing so, UWC received support and endorsements from Leah Tutu and the Desmond Tutu IP Trust, Shoprite/Checkers, Tiger Brands, Titan Cargo, Woolworths, The FIX, the Gift of The Givers Foundation, Awqaf and the Community Chest of the Western Cape.
UWC marked World Food Day, and Institutional Advancement hosted a successful food-packing event to support the UWC Student Food Bank. Throughout October, staff could support the campaign by donating food items. Donation boxes were placed across campus at department and faculty building entrances.
The Food for Success campaign raised donations totalling close to R120 000 in cash and approximately R30 000 in donated food items.
UWC Institutional Advancement Director Prof Anesh Singh said that due to the success of the campaign, we will continue the initiative annually: "Student hunger is a pressing reality that must be addressed. As a responsible institution, UWC launched the food drive because we believe in the goodwill and generosity of businesses, foundations and citizens committed to supporting student success. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all individuals and organisations who responded to our call to action. Your support makes a meaningful difference in the lives of our students."
No student should go hungry, and UWC will continue to consolidate and strengthen efforts to ensure that we combat hunger.
