Clinical and Health at UWC is ranked 501-600 globally and eighth in South Africa. International collaboration stands out, as shown by an International Co-authorship score of 85.3. Similarly, Social Sciences is ranked 501-600 globally and 7th in South Africa. This stability shows the faculty’s resilience and competitiveness in Research Quality and International Outlook.
This upward trajectory is reinforced by the expanding portfolio of national and international honours awarded to UWC researchers, including NRF Awards and A-ratings, multiple National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) Awards, and L’Oréal–UNESCO For Women in Science Awards, all of which recognise research excellence of global significance.

Taken together, the rankings outcomes and sustained award recognition underscore UWC’s evolving status as a research-led university, marked by a strategic emphasis on high-impact research, international collaboration and academic leadership within the global knowledge economy.”
Times Higher Education states that their World University Rankings by Subject 2026 methodology is “designed to evaluate universities across 11 subject areas using a refined version of the overall World University Rankings 2026 methodology.”
Globally, UWC maintained a consistent, stable ranking in 2026 across four areas: Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Law, and Social Sciences.
Law remains UWC’s highest-ranked subject, placed in the 301- 400 global band and ranked 9th in South Africa. “The results reflect continued progress across key performance indicators, including research quality, citation impact, and industry collaboration, alongside strong performance in internationalisation and teaching indicators. Collectively, these outcomes point to a strengthening research profile and the Faculty’s sustained contribution to high-quality, engaged legal scholarship," said Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof Jacques de Ville.
In 2024, UWC submitted 593.6077 research output units for accredited journal publications and received a final total of 578.4022 approved units, reflecting a 97.4% approval rate after all evaluations were completed.
UWC achieved 744.93 research output units in 2024, an increase from 690.36 units in 2023, reflecting steady year-on-year growth. Over the last decade, UWC’s total research output has grown by 49.8%, demonstrating sustained strengthening in research productivity.
Journal articles remain the backbone of UWC’s research output, with 578.40 accredited journal units awarded in 2024. This represents a 25.5% increase in journal article output over the past 10 years. The University maintained a 97.4% approval rate for journal article submissions, an indicator of strong research quality and compliance.
The latest rankings reaffirm that a historically disadvantaged institution in South Africa can compete on the global stage while staying true to its transformative mission. UWC has stayed true to this mission and, once again, placed comfortably within the top ten across various subject rankings compared to other South African universities.
