Udubs beach volleyball champs again

UWC Beach Volleyball female team were crowned as Varsity Beach Volleyball champions for the fourth consecutive time when they triumphed over UP-Tuks 33-29 in a fiercely-contested final on 5 May 2016.

The trio of Bejancke Della, Prudence Layters, Tsidi Dlamini and Kayla-Lee Provins were untouchable throughout the tournament as they cruised unbeaten through the pool stages, the semi-finals and the final.

In front of a sizeable team of home supporters at UWC Sports Field, the UWC pair Bejancka Della and Steers Most Valuable Player Prudence Layters made their intentions clear from the start by picking up the first points in the final. But Tuks proved to be tough opponents as they collected points of their own with the score changing and the lead switching hands a number of times in the first half. The home side led 18-15 at half time.

The second half started the same way as the first – with sizzling action. Although the home side took some early points, Tuks fought back and at one stage it was 23-22 with just under six minutes remaining.

But Della and Provins, who was replaced by Dlamini in the dying minutes of the game, capitalised on the mistakes of the opposition team to stretch the lead. They made sure their team remained in the lead until the finish line, keeping the trophy in the UWC cabinet once again.

Della, who captained UWC, paid respect to Tuks for their impressive contest and commended the University Sports Administration, home fans, event organisers and sponsors for making the tournament such a resounding success.
