Udubs soccer team in the final
UWC Ladies football team continued this season’s strong competition run at the weekend when they beat neighbours UCT 3-1 to reach their second consecutive Varsity Women’s Football final.
During this year’s tournament, held at North West University from 15 to 17 September, Udubs were on fire, finishing their group on top after edging out the hosts 2-1 in their opening fixture, and winning 4-1 and 2-1 victories over Central University of Technology and the University of Johannesburg, respectively, to set up a Cape derby semi-final against UCT.
In the semi-finals, two goals by Thalea Smidt and another one by Abongile Dlani for Udubs Ladies were enough to edge out UCT and set up another date with rivals from the Tshwane University of Technology in what will be a repeat of last year’s final.
UWC lost 1-2 to TUT at home in last year’s final, and they will be looking to avenge that defeat when they take on TUT in their backyard on Thursday, 22 September. Kickoff is at 15h00 - and the game will be televised live.
UWC Ladies have been in fine form this year; they reached the semi-finals of the Coca Cola Cup organised by Safa Cape Town, and they are also a serious contender for the Western Cape Safa Sasol League, the country’s top women’s league.
