Udubs takes 7s Rugby by storm
UWC Sevens Rugby team was tagged as the “surprise package” of the 2016 Varsity 7s Rugby tournament after their sterling performance saw them winning nine of the 11 games they participated in.
Despite such a good performance, Udubs narrowly missed out on bringing the trophy home when they lost to the neighbouring Maties of Stellenbosch University 19-5 in the final on Monday. Maties was the only side to beat UWC in the round-robin mini league at the Village Rugby Club in Claremont when they came out 26-7 victors.
UWC started the tournament on the high by downing UP-Tuks 31-12. After their Maties loss, Udubs crushed everything in their way, beating University of Fort Hare 24-17, followed by a 14-10 win over the University of Johannesburg.
Udubs continued their winning streak when they brushed aside defending champions Kosvies from the University of Free State 19-7 before beating neighbours Ikeys Tiger from the University of Cape Town 39-24. They also beat Walter Sisulu University 24-7.
In front of impressive home fans, including the ever entertaining UWC Spirit Squad and the UWC Choir, UWC picked up where they left off when they overcame Pukke from North West University 17-14 before completing their good run with a 14-12 win over Madibaz from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University to claim a spot in the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, Udubs did the double over Pukke by beating them 14-12.
