UWC boxers go for gold
Two UWC boxers have secured their tickets to the South African National Boxing Championships after they won their final bouts in the Western Cape Boxing Championships.
Sinethemba Blom and Nwabisa Tom both received gold medals, while their teammate Sandiso Kota settled for a bronze medal after he was beaten in the semi-final. Blom and Tom will travel to East London this month for the national championships with the goal of winning spots in the South African team that will go to the World Boxing Championships.
At a packed Vuyiseka Community Hall in Philippi on 7 June 2014, Blom outclassed Lunga Stemela in what has been called the Bout of the Tournament, to win the light welterweight division, while Tom went through a walk-over in the light middleweight division when she didn’t get an opponent.
It was the third time that Blom, a second-year BA student at UWC, beat Stemela in as many bouts this year. He said he was very happy with the win, as he had trained hard for the tournament.
The bigger picture for him now will be a gold medal at the national championships, something that has eluded him in the past.
“I’ve always lost in the semi-finals or quarterfinals, but this year I want to go all the way,” Blom commented.
Tom, who is graduating at UWC in September with a BCom, said she was happy to qualify for the national championships, but nervous that she would be going to the national event without fighting.
“Fights would have given me an opportunity to test myself so I can improve in going to the nationals,” she said. But Tom is still going to give it her all. “I’m aiming for gold and I’m training every day to be ready.”
UWC coach, Ginger Mapasa, noted that the Western Cape tournament was very tough and congratulated his boxers for their achievements, saying it shows the good work that the club is doing. The aim now, he said, was for his team to do well in the national championships and make the South African team.
