The University of the Western Cape (UWC) hosted two Career Xpos that brought together students and companies from various fields. Over two days, more than 2 500 students entered the Jakes Gerwel Hall, where they interacted with industry representatives and professionals who would, possibly, become their employers in the future.
Nazrana Parker, Manager of UWC Career Services, emphasised the importance of keeping students informed about industry trends and employer expectations.
“Our students need to be abreast of what’s happening and what recruiters are looking for,” she said.
The Career Xpo provided a safe and engaging platform for students to connect with graduate recruiters and UWC alumni representing the companies. For many first-generation students, this was an opportunity to build professional and social capital and gain insights into the skills needed for success.
Sarah Kabalu represented Lactalis - the world’s leading dairy manufacturing company. She said she felt enthusiastic to interact with UWC students.
“It was an eventful day at the career expo,” she said. Engaging with students, she reflected on her own university experience: “I wish I had somebody like myself back then - someone who could advise me.”

The UWC Career Xpos serve as vital bridges between the university and industry. As students explore career paths and gain insights, companies benefit from connecting with potential future employees.
UWC Career Services encourages students to attend these on-campus graduate recruitment events. For more information about job search preparation support and graduate recruitment activities, log onto the UWC Career Xplora portal, accessible via the UWC VPN.
