The University of the Western Cape’s Academic and Research Excellence Awards was held recently to honour the institution’s commitment to academic distinction, high-impact research and community-centred innovation. The event is a combined initiative by the offices of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Innovation portfolios.
It celebrated outstanding achievements while reinforcing the University of the Western Cape’s (UWC) position as one of Africa’s leading research-intensive institutions.
The event also highlighted the seamless collaboration between academic and research divisions, elevating the holistic contributions that make excellence at UWC possible, repositioning the University from a research-led university to a leading research University.
Prof Robert Balfour, UWC Rector and Vice-Chancellor, reminded the UWC community that excellence is a journey built through consistency, care and collective effort. He emphasised that achievements in research and teaching are never solitary, but rooted in the support systems, people and culture that shape “The UWC Way” — a practice grounded in rigour, accountability, dignity and care.
Prof Balfour highlighted both the realities and possibilities facing the institution, urging the community to embrace courage, resilience and bold experimentation as they pursue transformative scholarship. He closed his address by affirming UWC as a place where knowledge uplifts communities and expands freedom, honouring all recipients and the shared commitment that makes excellence possible.
"I am truly humbled and honoured to have received the Top Postgraduate Student (Honours 2024) award at the UWC Academic and Excellence Awards. This recognition is not only a testament to my hard work and dedication but also a celebration of the power of African languages and their importance in South African courts. This award is a reminder that my research on the use of isiXhosa in selected South African courts has the potential to make a meaningful impact. As a proud South African, I believe that language is a fundamental aspect of our identity and culture. By promoting the use of African languages in courts, we can increase access to justice and promote linguistic diversity. To my fellow students and readers, I would like to say that your language and culture are your strength. Do not be ashamed nor be afraid to use your African language, even in formal settings like courts. Let us work together to promote the use of African languages and celebrate our rich linguistic heritage in legal South African settings."
Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Innovation, Prof José Frantz, extended heartfelt thanks to the UWC community for supporting and celebrating this year’s awards.
She acknowledged the collaboration between all the individuals, partners and offices, and congratulated the winners, honoured all participants and supervisors, and affirmed that the successes recognised at the awards reflect a shared commitment to excellence, innovation and societal impact. She closed by encouraging the community to continue building a research culture that transforms lives and shapes the future.
This year’s awards 2025 brought together excellence from both academic and research spheres. The full list of combined categories recognised achievements across undergraduate and postgraduate studies, innovation, community engagement, research productivity, and academic leadership.
By combining categories from both the DVC: Academic and DVC: Research and Innovation portfolios, the awards provided a holistic celebration of excellence at UWC recognising achievement from undergraduate scholarship to world-class research, innovation, professional support, and community engagement.
As UWC moves into 2026, the Academic and Research Excellence Awards continue to inspire a culture of ambition, collaboration, and transformative knowledge creation, ensuring that the institution remains at the forefront of African and global scholarship.
