Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Student Development and Support at UWC Prof Matete Madiba.
Values Based Leadership is a theme anchored in the University’s current Institutional Operating Plan (IOP 2021 - 2025) and is at the heart of the academic and professional support programme at the University of the Western Cape.

Leadership development grounded in values is a key focus for any UWC staff member, and the Value-Based Leadership Development Programme (VBLDP) aims to empower leaders by instilling core values that align with the University’s mission.

Participants worked in groups and did Action-Learning Projects.

Acting Executive Director: Human Resources, Lionel Daniels, said: “On this journey we focused on leaders who exemplify all of the core values of UWC. So that's excellence, integrity, inclusivity, engagement, and collaboration. And this programme that you are on is aligned to UWC’s Institutional Operational Plan and is aligned to the vision of 2025. Your commitment to this project is highly valued.”

Keynote speaker, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Student Development and Support at UWC, Prof Matete Madiba, used her own career as a template to inspire the VBLDP participants.

She emphasised that their careers are in their own hands: “There's this concept of career management; it's not exactly the same as career development. The difference being that one is an enabler of the other. But the other thing that I've learnt is that when you are in an organisation, you tend to think it is the work of HR to do career management and to do career development for you. No, those are personal stuff. You have to do it for yourself. Others can really only support and be enablers, but it is really your responsibility. And I learned it the hard way.”

The Action Learning Project Topics were:

  • Fostering unity through Integrity and Accountability.
  • Collaboration in enhancing enrolment processes for prospective students: A School of Pharmacy Case Study.
  • UWC Perspectives on Academic Excellence: A Value Centric Investigation.
  • The Perception of Academic and Professional Service Staff about UWC’s Academic Excellence Core Value.
