Die Universiteit van die Wes-Kaap (UWK) het op Vrydag 27 Februarie 2026 ’n LGBTQIA+-Pride-optog aangebied wat studente, personeel en bondgenote in ’n dinamiese vertoning van solidariteit, sigbaarheid en tuishoort byeen gebring het.
Die geleentheid, met die Queer Dubs-forum as gasheer, was deel van die UWK se voortgesette verbintenis tot die voortbring van inklusiewe, bevestigende ruimtes vir queer lede van die kampusgemeenskap.
Die program is geopen deur ’n Pride-optog met die tema, “From Whispers to Wings” (“Van fluistering tot vlerke”), gevolg deur ’n oomblik van stilte vir die queer lewens wat weens diskriminasie en geweld verlore gegaan het. Die byeenkoms het daarna aanbeweeg na verskeie optredes, besinnings en kernboodskappe wat die politieke, maatskaplike en kulturele belangrikheid van pride aan die UWK beklemtoon het.
In sy toespraak het die UWK Rektor en Visekanselier, prof Robert Balfour, die Universiteit se verantwoordelikheid om as voorstander van waardigheid, gelykheid en geregtigheid in al sy ruimtes op te tree, herbevestig: “In die talle instellings waar ek gewerk het, het ek raakgesien dat baie jong mense, maar deesdae ook ouer mense, dit nie goed opneem as daar baie oor insluiting gepraat en baie teorie oor insluiting aangebied word, maar nie genoeg ervaring van insluiting is nie. Ons moet dus die droom van ingesluit word, uitleef; ons moet die praktyk van mekaar beskerm, uitoefen en ons moet die kultuur van saamwees voortbring.”
Skeppende optredes deur die loop van die geleentheid het die talent en uitdrukkingsvermoë van UWK-studente en -alumni ten toon gestel, wat energie en kleur aan die vieringe verleen het.
In haar toespraak het die Voorsitter van Queer Dubs en Direkteur van die UWK se Eenheid vir Gendergelykwaardigheid, dr Fikile Vilakazi-Alberts, die belangrikheid van kollektiewe bevryding uitgelig. Sy het beklemtoon dat die stryd om queer-insluiting die kruisende werklikhede van ras, klas en genderidentiteit moet erken en in gedeelde mag en gemeenskap gegrond moet wees.
Die geleentheid is afgesluit deur prof Balfour wat die LGBTQIA+-vlag gehys het.
Die plegtigheid en geleentheid was bedoel om sinvol en gedenkwaardig te wees, en te dien as ’n simbool van saamstaan, en doelgerigte en opsetlike viering van LGBTQIA+-pride in die aanloop tot die Kaapstad Pride-optog en Mardi Gras.

Image: Nathan Adams/UWCThe University of the Western Cape (UWC) held an LGBTQIA+ Pride Walk on Friday, 27 February 2026, bringing together students, staff and allies in a vibrant display of solidarity, visibility and belonging.
Hosted by the Queer Dubs Forum, the event formed part of UWC’s ongoing commitment to fostering inclusive, affirming spaces for queer members of the campus community.
The programme opened with a campus Pride Walk themed, “From Whispers to Wings”, followed by a moment of silence for queer lives lost to discrimination and violence. The gathering then moved into a series of performances, reflections and keynote messages that emphasised the political, social and cultural significance of pride at UWC.
In his address, UWC Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Robert Balfour, reaffirmed the University’s responsibility to champion dignity, equity and justice within all its spaces: “I have noticed in the many institutions that I've worked in that young people, but also older people nowadays, don't experience it well when there's a lot of talk about inclusion and a lot of theory. about inclusion, but not enough experience with inclusion. So we must live the dream of being included; we must practice the practice of protecting each other, and we must create the culture of being together.”
Creative performances throughout the event showcased the talent and expression of UWC students and alumni, bringing colour and energy to the celebration.
Addressing the crowd, Queer Dubs Chairperson and Director of UWC’s Gender Equity Unit, Dr Fikile Vilakazi-Alberts, highlighted the importance of collective liberation. She said the fight for queer inclusion must recognise the intersecting realities of race, class and gender identity, and must be rooted in shared power and community.
The event concluded with Prof Balfour doing the LGBTQIA+ flag hoisting.
The ceremony and event were intended to be meaningful and memorable, symbolising standing together, celebrating LGBTQIA+ pride with purpose and intention in the lead up to the Cape Town Pride March and Mardi Gras.
