The Varsity Sing Choral competition will be aired as a Reality television series on Kyknet DSTV channel 144 every Thursday at 20h30 and UWC will be featured on the show from 21 July and 28 July.
The UWC-CAC has accomplished numerous prestigious achievements, including winning the Western Cape Choral competition in 2012, 2013, and 2014. They also won the Old Mutual National Choir Festival in 2013, and the South African Tertiary Institutions Choral Association’s competition from 2009-2013.
Sibusiso Njeza, Coordinator for Community Engagement and Cultural Life at UWC said choirs are expected to sing original composed songs, South African traditional material and their own choice category of songs on the reality television series.
“The cash prize for the winner will be R70 000.00, R45 000.00 for the runner up, R25 000.00 for 3rd place winners, R10 000.00 for 4th place winners, and R50 000.00 as the public vote prize.”
“The larger campus community can support us by attending performances we will be taking part in, support means a lot when you are competing with strong opponents, they can also support us by voting when the lines are open”, he said.
Winners in the competition will be selected by a panel of judges; the famous South African R&B singer Loyiso Bala is on the panel. The competition has three different stages, the first round is per region with four regions selected to host. Two choirs per region will then proceed to the semi-finals and four choirs will participate in the finale which will be live on TV.
Sibusiso Njeza said there will be a number of promotional activities that will be taking place on campus and the UWC community will be informed about this via our social media sites and University website.
